Evil does exist because without it there can be no truth, no good and no love. I do not believe that that young man killed those people out if evil though i think he did it out of a confused mind. The greatest lie that satan has is to say he doesn't exist and that there is no evil but until we accept that there is a negative power is this world we cannot over come it.
There is great power in love. It is the greatest power we have been given. By loving one another we would do away with disagreements, arguments, and maybe even war. God said that his second greatest commandment was to to love one another. It is up to us to forgive all men of their wrong doing and for God to hand down the judgments.

Jeff, thanks for your comment. I suppose my answer is that I do not know. It makes sense that God would only allow evil if greater good could come out of it. The trouble is that we do not seem to always see greater good coming out of evil. And even if we say that God will eventually make a greater good out of an evil act, what would that mean? Would some kind of judgment in eternity be sufficient to have allowed evil on earth?

Personally I think it is better to plead "mystery" but in so doing, recognize the reality articulated in the quote above, namely, that evil is overcome by sacrificial love. While we cannot reconcile every act of evil in our experience, we can by our experience and theology believe that love overcomes evil. In that, we can trust that at some point, even if we never fully understand, God's ultimate love in Christ will overcome all evil.

Hello...

Although I am a Lutheran, I recall listening to a Priest on
television justify( ? ) the innocent deaths on 9/11 by saying that God allows evil to occur in this world because out of those events... comes a greater good. Although difficult at times to understand this point of view, I do believe it is an answer to the question of why. Have you an opinion on this ?
